Work of the aluminum wire

Needs dexterity, patience, strength but also a lot of thoroughness, a certain independence of movement between the hands / fingers of both hands, and a management of advanced tasks.



Realization of a fantasy jewel, a bracelet made of aluminum wire for wrist type adult / teenager (16 cm of turn).

Techniques used

  • The loop of head / end of wire (pliers with round tips)

Material needed

  • Round nose pliers

  • A clamp called "Flush Cutter" (cut at right angles)

  • Curved nose pliers

  • Flat nylon pliers (white nylon tips)

  • A mandrel (to form the arabesques)

  • A strong, durable glass bottle or bottle at wrist size


  • Uprights : 2 strands of Silver aluminum wire, 18.5 cm in Ø3 mm.

  • Arabesques : 6 strands of Black aluminum wire, 14 cm in Ø2 mm.

  • Arabesque : 1 strand of Silver aluminum wire, 14 cm in Ø2 mm.

  • Holding links : 30 strands of Silver aluminum wire, 9 cm in Ø0.8 mm.

  • Support rods : 4 strands of Silver aluminum wire, 6.5 cm in Ø0.8 cm.

  • Holding bars : 4 strands of Silver flat aluminum wire, 6.5 cm in Ø3.5 mm.



Step by step

Good !

So I want to make a fancy bracelet, aluminum wire, and for that I begin by measuring the turn of my wrist with a tape measure, for example. This gives me : 16 cm.

Think at all times that patience is the key word to move forward even if sometimes we wonder where we go. Keep in mind that you can always stop and then resume later. And in any case, do not give up for lack of patience. If not, what is the point of starting the manufacture of a jewel ? It is still a meticulous achievement that requires patience. This is how !

Go ... it's gone !

Formation of uprights and arabesques

  • I take my two strands of aluminum wire diameter 3 mm ( Ø3 ), Silver color, 18.5 cm long.

  • I mark them with the round-nose pliers, delicately but sufficiently hard.

  • Then, I form a loop at each end of each strand.

  • Then I take my wire Ø2 (diameter 2 mm), color Black, and I cut 6 strands of 14 cm each.

  • Then I take my Silver wire Ø2 and cut 1 strand of 14 cm.

I set myself the goal of making a 4 cm wide bracelet so that it is neither too wide nor too thin.

I put my 2 strands Ø3 (amounts) on my work plan and the space of 4 cm. The 4 cm are measured at the outer edges of the strands. This already gives me an overview of the shape, flat, of the bracelet.

  • I take each strand, one by one, and mark it with the round-nose pliers, delicately but strong enough. The marks are made as desired. Keep in mind that these marks will be seen once the finished bracelet. We must therefore think of maintaining an overall harmony even if we draw what we would like to obtain. Me, I did not do too complicated: I scored, for this version of Louny Belle, the central arabesque.

  • Then I take the mandrel and form a serpentine (S) that I call later, arabesque, making sure that each end touches the body of the S. That is to say that I take one of the ends and the loop at the clip, then do the same thing on the other side. Then I touch the body of the S by the loop, as in the photos above.

  • Once all my elements S (arabesques) formed, I place them between my two amounts of Ø3 .

  • I adjust their placement according to what I want to get as rendered. For the Louny Belle v2, I wanted to achieve a kind of central symmetry by putting a Silver arabesque between the series of 3, Black. I check that my marks are in agreement, on the whole.

Establishment of links to maintain the elements between them

Comes the time of cutting the holding links and setting them up. This is the longest and most delicate phase. Difficult because we must not distort the elements during the establishment of links.

  • I cut 30 strands of 9 cm long in Ø0.8 aluminum wire .

  • I take 2 arabesques (S) and I start to link them on each side of the wide parts, up and down (see photo above).

  • Then I add another arabesque (S) next to one of the two already attached.

  • Then, I add another arabesque and so on to get a set of arabesques bound by small links.

  • Each link is tight but not too much not to distort (or as little as possible if you can not do otherwise) the other elements. We must proceed gently every moment.

  • Each link begins with a small spiral that will keep the aluminum wire under the fingers during work. And we end up the same way to give a more aesthetic rendering, knowing that a maintenance link must maintain. It's really a game of tension that is not always easy to master. And everything can be different from one bracelet to another.

Now, we move to setting up the amounts. This is not an easy part to achieve. Always be careful when holding items while applying to bind. Too much pressure from the hand and / or fingers is enough to deform everything. It is not irremediable but it's annoying especially as we just spent a good time.

  • We place between the two amounts all the arabesques thus linked. We see if the rendering is as we wish. If the heads of arabesques are not aligned well on the two amounts at the same time, one adjusts to the best to be able to continue the setting up of the links.

  • Once done, we take an amount in one hand and we begin to link the arabesques, one by one. Work a little more complicated because the elements sometimes slide. You have to take your time and do not lose patience. Go! We continue...

  • Once the arabesques linked on one side to an amount, we attack the other side. We take the other amount and we proceed in the same way, one arabesque after another.

  • When finally everything is linked, we take the time to see if everything aligns well to make some adjustments, depending on the rendering and resistances more or less important in some places.

  • This is not a problem if the links are, for some, relaxed in relation to others. This is normal because as you work, the tensions change. What matters most is that every element is linked to another in several points of attachment. Thus, the whole becomes more stable and the bracelet shaping, none of them will escape in any way.

Now, it's time to move to the maintenance stage by the cross bars ... No, no, no panic, I explain ...

Setting up stabilization bars

  • I take my bars and holding rods and mark them with a repetitive pattern. I only scored bars of flat aluminum wire. It is aesthetic on this color Silver. On the black rods, it would not have had an interesting visible rendering.

  • I start to curl the ends but not quite of sorts that I can insert within each loop, and this on each side, the amounts. A bit like a hand that takes a bar, surrounds it and keeps it stably. Once done, on both sides of the bar ...

  • I hold it against the loops of the amounts.

  • Then, I proceed in the same way for my 2nd bar.

  • Then, same device for both stems.

  • I hold the set and perform the same procedures on the other side of the bracelet.

  • Now, everything is in place on the amounts, but we must link the arabesques to the last rod, and this on both sides .

  • We make our support links as before.

  • When you finish this final stage of the flat bracelet, it is estimated that 95% of the work is finished.

  • Phew ! ;-)

Wristband formation

  • Take the bottle or bottle (hard so that it does not sink during shaping).

  • Take the other hand with the bracelet flat.

  • From the hand holding the bottle, hold one of the ends of the bracelet with the palm and, while making it take the shape of the bottle, proceed gradually to heat the aluminum wires, which will become much more easy to model.

  • Once the shape is taken, remove the bracelet from the bottle by dragging it.

  • The two ends should not touch for a wrist of a 16 cm turn, just have a nice gap to wear. Depending on the fitting on your wrist or that of the person for whom you made it, you can completely tighten the bracelet, flatten it on the top of the wrist and round it on the sides. Keep in mind that to work too much without paying enough attention, it can distort it so unfriendly to the point of being obliged ...

  • No, rest assured, there is still the solution of the bottle ^ ^ You take it back and remodel the bracelet, heating it patiently, etc.
